Microcavitation contrast method for the drainage of bloody pericardial effusion.

چکیده
A 78-year-old woman experienced cardiac tamponade (Figure 1). At first, a drainage tube was inserted into the pericardial cavity through the fifth intercostal space guided by transthoracic echocardiography; however, the aspirate was bloody. We suspected that the tip of the drainage tube had been inserted into the intracardiac space. The microcavitation contrast was generated immediately by agitating a mixture of 0.5 mL of air, 0.5 mL of the aspirated fluid, and 8 mL of normal saline between two 10-mL syringes connected by a 3-way stopcock. The contrast medium (5 mL) was injected slowly into the pericardium through the drainage tube, care being taken to avoid air bubbles (Figure 2). The microcavitation contrast around the heart on transthoracic echocardiography (as illustrated in the online-only Data Supplement Movie) confirmed that the tip of the drainage tube was in the pericardial cavity.

Bloody pericardial tamponade in a child treated for pneumonia mimicking a lung tumor and infiltration of the heart
We present the dramatic course of a female 5-year-old child with pneumonia and symptoms similar to local compression of the pericardium by a tumorous mass originating from the left lung. The child was treated with antibiotics for pneumonia with bilateral pleural effusions that required chest drainage. On the 10(th) day of therapy there was sudden anemia observed with the echocardiographic findi...
متن کاملBloody pericardial effusion in patients with cardiac tamponade: is the cause cancerous, tuberculous, or iatrogenic in the 1990s?
STUDY OBJECTIVES The decrease in incidence of tuberculosis, along with the increase in invasive cardiovascular procedures, may have changed the frequency of causes of bloody pericardial effusion associated with cardiac tamponade, although this is not yet recognized by medical textbooks. We analyzed the causes of bloody pericardial effusion in the clinical setting of cardiac tamponade in the 199...
متن کاملClinical characteristics of patients with constrictive pericarditis after coronary bypass surgery.
Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is an unusual sequela of cardiac surgery, so the present study evaluated the clinical characteristics of patients with CP after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Four hundred and sixty-three patients who underwent isolated CABG between January 1989 and March 1999 were examined retrospectively. The first choice of treatment for postoperative pericardial effus...

A 73-year-old woman was admitted due to exertional dyspnea. It was considered that a large amount of pericardial effusion caused diastolic heart failure; pericardial paracentesis showed bloody effusion. There were no findings of malignancy or other abnormal findings in the examination. Further examinations were planned but she died of ventricular tachycardia attack. Pathological autopsy reveale...
متن کاملMassive bloody pericardial effusion as an initial manifestation of chronic kidney disease.
We describe a 35-year-old man with a massive bloody pericardial effusion, which was his initial manifestation of chronic kidney disease. Pericardiocentesis and hemodialysis restored cardiac function and relieved the associated massive anasarca.
